Risk Assessment and Safety policy

NALS is committed to promoting a positive learning environment that supports physical and emotional well-being of all participants. We take great pride in our safety management and risk assessment of all our outdoor programs.

All outdoor activities involve natural hazards due to weather, animals, insects and snakes. There are also man made hazards such as illness, tripping & falling, negligence in safety matters, poorly maintained equipment, traffic hazards etc. Thus, even a simple day hike can become dangerous and potentially life threatening, due to error in judgment or the unpredictable forces of nature.

When we operate away from the city, the remoteness of the areas in which we travel can create complex emergency situations that have no simple solutions. It is not uncommon to be days from medical help. The majority of medical incidents (sprains, fever, cold, diarrhea, etc.) may be treated in the field. A more serious incident, such as a fracture, will require evacuation of the patient to a medical facility.

NALS uses third party modes of transport during the programs. It could be trains, buses, airplanes or other arrangements. It must be realized that NALS has no control over their operational safety and expertise, other than only supervising their efficient functioning to meet our schedules.

It is very important you understand that there are risks. NALS does not guarantee your safety but will do everything within reasonable means, to keep you safe. The risk of injury, even serious injury or death, is unavoidable in the outdoor environment in which we operate. Indeed, much of the value of a NALS program lies in learning how to identify hazards and adapt behavior, not only on the program, but also for a lifetime of enjoying the outdoors.

Good physical conditioning and a positive mental attitude are essential. Each participant plays an important role in the success of a NALS program.

Careful and meticulous planning goes into each program, the activities planned and the equipment used. Team leaders are qualified persons from recognized institutes or have great depth and sufficient experience in the area of work. Participants are briefed upon arrival, about the program schedule, activities involved and how to take care of themselves. All visitors must download and read the document “Campus Guidelines” from www.nals.in so that they are well informed.

Other Salient features of our Safety policy and Implementation
  • Team leaders in trek / adventure programs are Certified Mountaineering Instructors.
  • Team Leaders undergo training for Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid (CPR & FA) and certified by qualified professionals from the medical industry.
  • Purchase of technical equipment (ropes / carabiners and so on) only from reputed manufacturers.
  • Periodic and qualified upkeep, inspection and maintenance of technical equipment.
  • Periodic review of safety procedures.
